Custom Motorized Shutters Solve a Difficult Specialty-Shaped Window Problem

A custom solution helped this Metro Detroit homeowner control the sun, reduce the heat in their living room, and finally find a way to cover their specialty-shaped windows.
Before After
Some window treatment projects are pretty straightforward. Others take a little more thought.
That was the case with this recent installation. The homeowners already had shades covering the lower portion of their living room windows, but the specialty-shaped windows above them were still completely uncovered. During certain times of the day, the sun would pour through those upper windows and make the living room noticeably warmer.
They knew they wanted to do something about it, but they weren't sure what the right solution was for the shape of the windows.
Finding the Right Solution for the Specialty Shape
When I first looked at the windows, it was clear that a standard shade wasn't going to solve the problem. The upper portions of the windows had unique shapes, so whatever we installed needed to be custom made for the openings.
We decided on Norman Woodlore Plus shutters, custom built for the specialty-shaped windows. Shutters worked particularly well for this project because they could follow the shape of the windows while also giving the homeowners the ability to control how much sunlight comes through.
I also liked that we weren't trying to change something that didn't need changing. The shades on the lower portion of the windows were already doing their job. We were able to add a custom solution above them to address the part of the windows that was causing the problem.
Motorized Shutters With Solar Charging
There was another feature that made this project especially interesting: the shutters are motorized.
Each shutter panel has its own solar panel to help keep it charged, and the homeowners can operate the shutters with a remote control.
For specialty-shaped windows, that convenience makes a big difference. Instead of having to reach each individual shutter panel to adjust it, they can control them from across the room.
It also allowed us to avoid running traditional wiring to the shutters, keeping the installation clean while still giving the homeowners the convenience of motorization.
The Biggest Difference Was How the Room Feels

Of course, the shutters look great, but the real reason the homeowners wanted to make this change was the heat.
Once the shutters were installed, they immediately noticed how much cooler the living room felt. They now have control over the sunlight coming through the upper windows, which was something they didn't have before.
That's one of my favorite parts of doing custom window treatments. The finished product should look beautiful, but it should also make a difference in how you live in the space.
In this case, we solved a very specific problem. The homeowners didn't need to replace all of their existing window treatments. They needed a way to address the sunlight coming through the specialty-shaped windows above them.
Now they have a solution that looks like it belongs with the architecture of the home, can be adjusted with the push of a button, and has made the living room much more comfortable.
Custom Means Finding the Right Solution for the Home
This project is a good reminder that there isn't one window treatment that's right for every window.
Sometimes it's a roller shade. Sometimes it's a Roman shade, cellular shade, or drapery. And sometimes, like this project, a custom shutter is the right answer.
The important part is understanding what the homeowner is trying to accomplish and then finding a product that works for the window, the room, and the way the homeowner wants to use it.
That's the approach I take with every project at Perr Daht. I don't want to sell you a window treatment just because it's what I have available. I want to find the right solution for your home.
If you have specialty-shaped, arched, or difficult-to-cover windows that are letting in too much sunlight or making a room uncomfortable, I'd be happy to take a look.
