Every so often, we walk into a home where the goal isn’t to make a dramatic design statement — it’s simply to make the space work better. That was the case with this recent project in Macomb, Michigan, where the homeowners wanted more control over light, better privacy, and materials that could stand up to everyday life. Nothing flashy, nothing over-the-top… just smart choices that make each room a little more comfortable.

Here’s how we tackled it.

A Better Work Environment: Day/Night Honeycomb Shades in the Office

The office had a west-facing window that looked great during the morning and early afternoon but turned into a problem once the sun started dropping. Around sunset, the glare made it a challenge to work at the desk.

We installed Norman day/night honeycomb shades, which gave them two things at once:

  • A sheer top that lets in natural light without washing out the room

  • A light-filtering bottom that softens the strong evening sunlight

The UV protection built into the fabrics also helps protect furniture and décor from fading over time. It’s a simple fix with a big payoff — the room now stays bright, usable, and far more comfortable.

Primary Closet: Light When You Want It, Privacy When You Need It

Closets often get ignored, but in this home, sunlight hits the space directly. That’s great for visibility, but not great for clothing. We used the same day/night honeycomb shade in the closet, with a slightly different fabric setup:

  • The sheer top lets daylight in so the space doesn’t feel closed off

  • The room-darkening bottom provides full privacy

  • Both fabrics help block UV rays to keep clothing and accessories from fading

It’s one of those upgrades that feels small but makes day-to-day routines noticeably better.

Spare Bedroom & Kitchen: Durable Ultimate Faux Wood Blinds

Spare Bedroom

We installed Norman’s Ultimate faux wood blinds, which have a clean, classic look and are easy for guests to adjust. They’re simple, dependable, and won’t go out of style.

Above a sink, real wood just doesn’t last. Moisture and steam eventually take their toll. Faux wood, on the other hand, holds up beautifully — no warping or swelling. These blinds look like wood but handle the environment far better.

Sliding Door: A Floor-to-Ceiling SmartDrape™

The last piece of the project was the sliding door. The homeowners wanted something that moved softly, added privacy, and didn’t get in the way of daily use. We installed a floor-to-ceiling SmartDrape™ in a soft grey tone with a subtle circles pattern and silver hardware.

One of the biggest perks of SmartDrape is being able to walk through the vanes without fully opening the shade — something clients really appreciate on high-traffic patio doors. It gives the room a more finished, polished look while still staying incredibly practical.
